The internationally recognized symbol for peace was originally designed for the British nuclear disarmament movement. It was designed and completed on February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a professional art designer, in Britain for the April 4th march by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC) in Trafalgar Square, London to the planned Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England. The symbol was later adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND.) It was adopted first by the 1960’s anti-war movement, then the counterculture and finally the popular culture of the time.
