The figure known as the Green Man is a god of vegetation and plant life. The Green Man symbolizes the life that is found in the vast natural plant world and is based on the energy of the earth itself. The forests, a thousand years ago, were vast, dense, dark places that went on farther than the eye could see.

The most most common interpretation of the Green Man is that of a pagan nature spirit, a symbol of man’s reliance on and union with nature, a symbol of the underlying life-force, and of the renewed cycle of growth each spring. In the 16th Century Cathedral at St-Bertrand de Comminges in southern France, there is even an example of a representation of a winged Earth Mother apparently giving birth to a smiling Green Man.

As Christianity spread, the Green Man went into hiding, with stonemasons leaving secret images of his face around cathedrals and churches. He enjoyed a revival during the Victorian era, when he became popular with architects, who used his visage as a decorative aspect in buildings.
