Humpty Dumpty is a character in an English nursery rhyme.  It probably started out as a riddle and is one of the best known rhymes in English.

The first recorded versions go back to the 1870’s. This style is known as a single quatrain with external rhymes which were a popular style for nursery rhymes. These could be read or sung to babies and young children.
