Description
Dewi Sri is believed to rule over the underworld and also the moon. She encompasses all aspects of the Mother/Goddess aspect by controlling the rice. Rice is a staple of Indonesians. It is woven into all aspects of their life, wealth and prosperity. Many kingdoms in Java are thought to be especially wealthy because of their abundance of rice. Those areas that don’t have good rice production are plagued with poverty, famine and disease leading to death.
Figures of Dewi Sri are brought into the house so she may bring good health and prosperity to the family and small amounts of rice were put onto her back as an offering.
This hand-carved and painted hanging sculpture would be a great accent for any home with its wonderful representation of Indonesian culture and folklore.
