History:
His fame derives from the pious legend of him being a “Christ-bearer” which equals or is the same as the name Christopher.
He was a powerfully built man who wandered the world in search of novelty and adventure. He came upon a hermit who lived beside a dangerous stream and made his living helping others find safe passage across the turbulent water.
Christopher took the hermit’s place and instead of telling them where to cross he carried them safely across the stream. He offered help to those in need as an instrument or in service of God.
One day Christopher was tasked with carrying a small child across the water. The weight of the child nearly crushed him. When the child was safely delivered to the other side; the child revealed himself as Christ. Christ was heavy because he bore the weight of the world on himself.
Christ baptized Christopher with the water from the stream. That is how Saint Christopher became the champion of all things related to travel, travelers, water, etc.
