When my 19-year-old nephew showed me this photo I was so impressed by the idea of him surfing. But that wasn’t what he was trying to show me.
Kevin said, “That’s the board I made! Isn’t it sweet?”
He was so proud of what he had created. It reminded me of how excited I used to get when I would paint. I haven’t finished anything in years, but I do have a few unfinished projects.
My accomplishments now fit along the lines of replacing the seals on the toilet or learning how to replace a light in the Hall Ceiling. ( I really like youtube. You can learn pretty much anything there.)
But I digress! The point is I get satisfaction from learning and finishing these projects; however, they don’t give me the absolute joy of creating something for the sheer pleasure in the doing. The idea of making something – just because!
Keven can buy a surfboard. He has purchased quite a few. I have never seen him as excited about surfing as when he was talking about taking his creation (the yellow surfboard) out to test it in the Pacific.
It reminded me that we all need to make time to find that bliss that makes us forget about time and space, where we are so immersed in the doing, we become oblivious to what’s around us and dwell in Happy Land.
Find what takes you on that journey – if you haven’t already – it keeps the spirit healthy!
